But I really do love it. I fell in love with it when I was at my sister’s piano recital about 3 years ago on a Saturday evening in January. A girl my sister’s age had decided to play it and I had forgotten what it sounded like until she played the first few notes. Once I recognized it, I figured that since she was 11 she was probably going to butcher it, so I braced for impact. I soon found that this was unnecessary, as she did a very good job, good enough to make me daydream. I dreamed of a beautiful experience, radiant, almost celestial, but I didn’t think anything like that would be happening to me anytime soon so I decided I’d put it in the novel I was working on at the time.</p> <p>Exactly one week later, though, I found myself experiencing the beginning of something very beautiful indeed that I both had and hadn’t seen coming. I was surprised and yet it felt right, and I was so happy that I didn’t have to put it in a story to experience it in some way.</p> <p>3 years later, the experience was comparable to a terminally ill cancer patient in the 15th month of the estimated 16 they were given to live. I went to another one of my sister’s piano recitals, wondering if that girl would be there and if she’d play Clair de Lune again. But the girl was not there and nobody played Clair de Lune. I spent most of the time staring desperately at the glowing, fake Christmas tree behind the piano, trying to swallow my sadness.</p> <p>But this piece brings up no bad memories or ill feelings. Though it is solitary, it’s still comforting and intimate. It’s the moon. And, for me at least, whenever I look up at the moon (or listen to this piece, the auditory equivalent), I don’t feel alone or hopeless. I feel wonder, and I hear this wonder in the last few chords of this piece.
